Ocean Motomachi Building 301

The Ocean Motomachi Building 301 is a 2LDK apartment located in the heart of Yokohama’s famous Motomachi Street with 75.30 sqm of space and only a 3-minute walk from Ishikawacho Station on the JR Negishi Line or a 9-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line.

If you will be working in Tokyo, you will most likely be using the Minatomirai Line, which runs through Yokohama Station and straight into Tokyo on the Tokyu-Toyoko Line.

The Ocean Motomachi Building was built in 1999, is a 7-story steel and reinforced concrete building.

The building entrance has an auto-lock with video intercom connecting to each unit in the building.

The common areas are kept clean, well maintained, and show very little wear and tear.

First, let’s take a look at the washroom which accommodates a vanity sink, toilet with bidet and closet for the washing machine.

The bathroom is a typical Japanese style bathroom with a space to wash your body and a tub for soaking.

The kitchen has plentiful cabinet space both below the counter and above, with enough space on the opposite wall for the refrigerator and additional space for a kitchen rack or kitchen stand.

The living room is spacious by Japanese standards with 16-jo of space or an equivalent of 16 tatamis, and a large window with two sliding glass doors accessing the balcony which faces south.

The bedroom on the western side of the unit is also larger than usual at 8.5-jo or an equivalent of 8.5 tatamis. This bedroom is also a corner unit with windows on both the southern wall and western wall.

The smaller bedroom in the middle is 6-jo, which is pretty standard for a typical bedroom with a sliding door accessing the balcony and a large closet on the northern side of the room.

The rent for this apartment is 185,000 yen a month, which is reasonable considering you have access to both a JR Line and the Minatomirai Line. More importantly, however, is that this unit is located in the heart of Motomachi.

The Motomachi Street can be called the Ginza of Yokohama, and is home to a number of name-brand shops and high-end retailers.

The stone-paved street is shy of 600 meters long and is lined with about 230 stores.

There are hundreds more shops including small restaurants and bars lining the two streets that run parallel to Motomachi street: Motomachi-Kawagishidori Street next to Nakamura River and Motomachi Nakadori Street on the opposite side just below the bluff.

Upon the opening of the Port of Yokohama to the western world in 1859, an influx of businessmen, sailors, traders, merchants, and more inhabited the portside area of Yokohama.

The locals established shops and stores to cater to the growing community of expats looking to purchase clothing, flowers, hats, dry goods, furniture, matches, bicycles, and souvenirs.

It was around this time that cafes, bakeries, restaurants, taverns, teahouses, and more were introduced to Japan for the first time as the local farmers and fishermen switched to the retail and service industry.

After WWII, the area saw a revival as American troops and their families living nearby often visited the district for shopping and entertainment.

As the presence of the U.S. forces decreased, local Japanese saw Motomachi Street as a unique destination for shopping and dining where young women could be seen wearing the latest in high fashion.

Boutiques featuring expensive jewelry and watches, and overseas name brands set up shop in Motomachi further attracting wealthier clientele while at the same time shops featuring the latest trends in music and fashion grew to accommodate the tastes of younger generations.

Living in the Motomachi district gives you easy access to Chinatown, which lies just across the Nakamura River, and is within walking distance of Yamashita Park, the Harbor View Park, and many of the historical buildings and churches up on the bluff that are open to the general public.
